Alors forcément, une playlist publiée deux jours après la Journée internationale des droits des femmes… Ce mois-ci, nous vous proposons donc une collection entièrement féminine, de A à Z. Littéralement. Un abécédaire de 26 interprètes qui ne sont incluses dans aucune de nos compilations précédentes. Soit un total de 26 chansons, en anglais, arabe, espagnol et français.
🇬🇧 Over here on Pop! Goes the Music, we love any occasion to celebrate ladies and give them the spotlight. Since International Women’s Day was a couple of days ago, we thought we’d make this month’s playlist all about women, from A to Z. Literally. So here’s a selection of 26 artists that we haven’t featured in any of our previous mixtapes; 26 songs in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.
A… Alicia Keys – Underdog (2020)
🇫🇷 Pour pas mal de 90’s (et early 00’s) babies, Alicia Keys a été l’un de nos premiers contacts avec le r’n’b et la soul. Que ce soit à travers Fallin’ (2001) mettant en avant ses atouts vocaux dès les premières notes, If I Ain’t Got You (2004) dont la magistrale intro au piano prend aux tripes, ou No One (2007) au rythme si accrocheur, la New-Yorkaise a su s’imposer et rester sur la scène musicale. Même si ses derniers albums lui ont valu moins de reconnaissance que ses premiers, la qualité y est toujours. Choisir un seul titre de sa discographie a été un peu dur, mais j’ai finalement arrêté mon choix sur le deuxième single de son plus récent album ALICIA (2020), pour le message qu’il porte — un hymne dédié aux underdogs — et les bonnes ondes du son. ⬪ Ahlem Khattab
🇬🇧 For some 90s (and early 00s) babies like myself, Alicia Keys was one of our first experiences of soul and r’n’b music. I’ll never not get goosebumps as I hear her kick off Fallin’ (2001), feel my heart ache to the sound of that piano hook in I Ain’t Got You (2004) or bop along mindlessly to No One (2007). The NYC-born multi-talented artist undoubtedly made history again and again, and continues to make songs that are just as worth a listen as her previous work. It was tempting to open this playlist with an oldie, but at the end, the lyrics and the general vibe of this track from her latest album ALICIA (2020) won me over. ⬪ Ahlem Khattab
B… Britney Spears – I’m a Slave 4 U (2001)
🇫🇷 C’est une de mes chansons préférées de Britney Spears. Déjà le clip est incroyable, je me rappellerai toute ma vie d’être “choquée” par la tenue de Britney. Dans cette track, elle demande pourquoi on la traite encore comme une petite fille, sous-entendu “docile”. A ce sujet, je vous conseille de regarder le documentaire Framing Britney Spears produit par le New York Times et sorti il y a peu. Journalistes, fans et proches de la star reviennent sur le traitement médiatique misogyne et problématique de l’un des plus grandes popstars des années 90-2000. ⬪ Marie Bail
🇬🇧 It’s one of my favorite songs ever by Britney Spears. First of all, the music video is amazing. I’ll forever remember Britney’s outfit, which “shocked” me when I was a kid. In this song, she asks why she’s still being treated like a little girl, meaning tamed. I strongly recommend watching the New York Times’ documentary Framing Britney Spears. Journalists, relatives and fans go over her career, her highly publicized breakdown and the misogynistic way she was treated as one of the greatest pop stars of the 90-2000s. ⬪ Marie Bail
C… Cinya Khan – Finger Freedom (2019)
🇫🇷 C’est un peu par hasard que je suis tombée, il y a quelques mois, sur l’une des covers de cette étudiante à Berklee College of Music, l’une des meilleures écoles de musique aux Etats-Unis. Je ne m’attendais à rien en particulier en activant le son, et aussitôt, j’ai eu un coup de coeur pour sa voix. Son timbre chaleureux, sa maîtrise dans les hauts et dans les bas, tout sonne si naturel qu’on en oublierait le travail qu’il y a derrière. Comme si c’était la chose la plus facile au monde. Cinya Khan a également un talent pour la composition et a déjà sorti officiellement quelques chansons (elle en a partagé plus encore, sur Soundcloud seulement pour l’instant). L’une de ses meilleures réussites parolières jusque là est sans doute Finger Freedom, où elle joue avec les mots en comparant la liberté qu’elle ressent après une rupture à celle de sa main que plus personne ne (re)tient. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Some time last year, I stumbled upon a video of a young woman with a guitar. I wasn’t expecting much as I hit the unmute button, but then what I heard instantly blew me away. It wasn’t so much of a powerhouse sort of voice, but more of the soft kind. The type of vocals that can do riffs and runs so gently they make it feel like it’s no work at all. As I got to know Cinya Khan beyond her beautiful covers, I discovered that she’s as much of a skilled songwriter as a singer. Currently a student at Berklee College of Music — one of the best music schools in the United States — she has already released a few songs (some of which are only available on Soundcloud, sadly). Finger Freedom showcases her wordplay at its funnest and cleverest, as she illustrates moving on from a past relationship through her hands (and fingers) regaining their freedom. ⬪ AK
D… Diam’s – Confessions nocturnes (2006)
🇫🇷 Diam’s est LA rappeuse française des années 2000. Dans cette chanson elle va défoncer la BMW du tocard qui sert de mec à sa meilleure copine. On aime l’énergie même s’il y a un brin de culpabilisation des “michto” de Paris. Elle parle ainsi de la fille avec qui le mec trompe sa pote : “Les filles comme toi ne méritent pas plus qu’un petit bout de trottoir.” Donc oui, ça n’est pas très féministe (et c’est putophobe soit dit en passant) mais ça rappelle qu’on peut faire bien plus en termes de sororité. Certes, je ne vous dis pas d’être meilleure pote avec la fille qui “chine” votre partenaire, mais disons que la “faute” ne devrait pas retomber sur Andy” de Confessions nocturnes. Aujourd’hui, Diam’s a complètement changé de parcours, elle ne chante plus mais défend la liberté de la femme religieuse. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 Diam’s is THE French female rapper of the 2000s. In this track, she smashes her BFF’s cheating boyfriend’s car. We love the energy, although we don’t support the slut-shaming going on here, it’s not very feminist. But I’d say it’s a good reminder to call for more support between women. I’m not saying that you should be best friends with the girl who’s flirting (or more) with your partner, but maybe, it’s not poor Andy’s fault if the boyfriend is cheating in Confessions nocturnes. Today, Diam’s no longer sings nor raps, but she fights for religious freedom for women. A far from easy career. ⬪ MB
E… Ella Fitzgerald – I Can’t Get Started (1955)
🇫🇷 C’est l’une des plus grandes femmes du jazz, et dès qu’on l’écoute, on comprend pourquoi. Vingt-quatre ans après sa mort, Lady Ella reste une référence, que ce soit pour son timbre de voix unique et sa maîtrise vocale (ses musiciens accordaient leurs instruments en se calant sur sa voix, selon la radio américaine NPR) ou pour ses talents d’improvisation et de scat particuliers. Du Ella Fitzgerald ça peut s’écouter en journée, mais pour moi, c’est toujours meilleur le soir. Ses chansons me transportent… pas forcément vers un passé que je n’ai pas connu, je n’aime pas romancer un temps où les discriminations étaient bien plus visibles et ancrées qu’aujourd’hui (et l’artiste américaine en a bien souffert tout au long de sa carrière). Mais sa musique m’emmène ailleurs, quelque part loin de ma réalité. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 One has only to listen… to understand why some call her “Queen of Jazz”. Twenty-four years after her passing, Lady Ella remains one of the greatest. Be it for her pure voice (her pitch was so perfect, band musicians would try to match it when tuning their instruments, according to NPR) or for her improvisation and scat skills. I love putting on some Ella Fitzgerald, especially at night. I find that her songs pull me away from the present. Not to imagine a past I wasn’t alive to witness myself, I wouldn’t want to romanticize a time where discriminations were even more rooted and blatant than they are today (Fitzgerald suffered from those throughout her career). But her music does take me somewhere far away, even if I don’t move physically one bit. ⬪ AK
F… Fairuz – Bahebek Ya Lebnan بحبك يا لبنان (1976)
🇫🇷 À 86 ans, elle reste la plus célèbre artiste musicale libanaise au monde. Fairuz chante, entre autres, l’amour de son pays ravagé par la guerre civile qui déchira sa population pendant plus de quinze ans (1975-1990). Avec Oum Kalthoum, elle fait partie des chanteuses qui ont vendu le plus de disques dans l’histoire de la musique arabe. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 At 86, Fairuz is still the biggest Lebanese singer in the world. She famously sang lovingly about her home country, torn apart, for more than 15 years, by a civil war (1975-1990). Along with Oum Kalthoum, she is one of the best-selling artists in the history of Arabic music. ⬪ MB
G… Gabrielle Aplin – Nothing Really Matters (2019)
🇫🇷 Originaire de Wiltshire, Aplin fait partie de la génération d’artistes qui se sont fait connaître aux débuts des années 2010 grâce à des reprises de chansons connues qui ont cartonné sur YouTube. Adepte de musique acoustique, l’autrice-compositrice anglaise a naturellement bâti son univers musical sur ces sonorités-là. Mais dès 2016, elle s’est mise à expérimenter avec des sons plus rythmés et joviaux. Le tout en gardant la sensibilité qui caractérise ses textes. Et parce qu’on ne se défait jamais réellement de ses premiers amours, l’artiste revisite souvent ses propres titres pour en offrir une version au piano ou à la guitare acoustique. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Born in Wiltshire, singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin had her break in the early 2010s, back when covers on YouTube went viral and actually helped artists launch their careers. Ever the fan of all things acoustic, the British artist made it a staple in building her own sound. But starting 2016, she began playing with more upbeat production styles while staying true to her trademark sensitivity lyrically. Luckily for acoustic music enthusiasts like myself, she still honors her original sound by offering alternate versions of her new releases, either on piano or on guitar. ⬪ AK
H… H.E.R. – I Can’t Breathe (2020)
🇫🇷 Artiste soul et r’n’b, Gabriella Wilson a une voix à faire vibrer votre cage thoracique. Après le meurtre de Georges Floyd, la jeune autrice-compositrice a sorti I Can’t Breathe (“Je ne peux pas respirer”, en français). Cette ballade, douce et mélancolique, est pourtant lourde de sens. Elle y dénonce notamment l’insécurité de vivre en tant que femme racisée aux Etats-Unis. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 R’n’b and soul singer-songwriter Gabriella Wilson will shake you to your core with her voice. She’s also an artist who’s not afraid to get political: after Georges Floyd’s death, she released a song called I Can’t Breathe, echoing his last words. A sonically soft song that is charged with meaning lyrically. Calling out racism, it also denounces the insecurity of life as a black woman in the US. ⬪ MB
I… Ibeyi – Mama Says (2015)
🇫🇷 Ce qui est fascinant chez ces jumelles franco-cubaines, c’est qu’elles arrivent à composer, à partir de n’importe quel son, une mélodie accrocheuse et touchante. Lisa-Kaindé et Naomi Diaz brillent particulièrement dans les performances live, où elles (re)construisent leur musique, avec ses rythmes et harmonies, devant les yeux des spectateurs. Leur son est particulier, une fusion des genres reprenant notamment des sonorités inspirées par leurs origines. Leurs dernières sorties datent de 2019, mais un troisième disque semble être en route… ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 The amazing thing about this duo — made up of twins Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz — is that they can build a catchy and moving melody off one simple sound. Which is even more impressive when you see them in a live setting, overlaying instruments and vocals, in real-time. Their music is a beautifully-crafted mix of genres and influences in which the sisters pay tribute to their Afro-Cuban roots. After a couple of releases in 2019, it seems that they have a third album on the way. ⬪ AK
J… Jhené Aiko – Triggered (2020)
🇫🇷 Ce qui est difficile avec l’Américaine Jhené Aiko, c’est qu’on aurait envie de mettre toutes ses chansons. La douceur de sa voix et son flow ont des vertus thérapeuthiques. Surtout pour les cœurs brisés ou les âmes en quête de méditation. Son interprétation pour la série Tiny Desk de la radio américaine NPR finira de vous convaincre. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 What’s hard for me with Jhené Aiko is that I’d want to pick every song of hers. Her sweet voice and her flow have therapeutic virtues, especially for the broken hearts and for those who are seeking some peace. Her Tiny Desk performance for NPR will definitely convince you of her greatness. ⬪ MB
K… Kacey Musgraves – Slow Burn (2020)
🇫🇷 Golden Hour (2018) a été pour moi un album qui m’a accompagnée dans autant de moments heureux que très durs. Quand je ne me sens pas de me lever, je le lance (il démarre avec Slow Burn, d’où la recommandation), et ça adoucit aussitôt mon matin (efficace même pour les réveils à 5 h). Originaire du Texas, Musgraves a tracé son propre chemin dans la country, se distinguant par une ouverture d’esprit assumée (son titre Follow Your Arrow,sorti en 2013, en est un bon exemple) qui n’est pas forcément toujours associée à ce genre musical. Et ses textes peuvent être aussi délicats que drôles ou mordants. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Soon after its release in 2018, Golden Hour became for me an essential part of my music library. There for me in good and bad times, it even softened the harshness of early mornings. I’d put the record on and let Kacey Musgraves’ soothing voice and melodies carry me up. The Texas-born singer made a name for herself in country music by being unapologetically who she is: daring and open-minded – a rarity in that genre back then (just give her 2013 song Follow Your Arrow a listen). In her writing, she can be as delicate as she can be sharp. Her strong suit? Witty wordplay. ⬪ AK
L… Lala &ce – Wet – Drippin’ (2020)
🇫🇷 Rappeuse originaire de la banlieue lyonnaise, Lala &ce (à prononcer Lala Ace) vient de sortir son album Everything Tasteful en janvier. Lala&ce parle d’amour entre femmes, de sexe sensuel sur des belles phases de cloud rap. Avant de pouvoir la voir pour de vrai en concert, je vous recommande de regarder sa performance pour le studio berlinois Colors. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 Born in Lyon (France) but currently London-based, Lala &ce released her first album, titled Everything Tasteful, last January. She sings and raps about love between women and sensual sex, over cloud rap beats. While we can’t see her live right now, we can always watch her performance for the German Colors studios. ⬪ MB
M… Majida El Roumi – Kon Sadiki كن صديقي (1995)
🇫🇷 Grand nom de la musique arabophone, la chanteuse libanaise a marqué les esprits (et les oreilles) par un son aux influences européennes, inédit, et des paroles poétiques au brillant storytelling. Parmi ses plus importants titres, Kon Sadiki. Un texte fort qui joue sur le double-sens de “sadik” (en arabe, le mot peut signifier “ami” tout comme “sincère”) et questionne les relations homme-femme et l’objectification des femmes dans celles-ci. “Alors pourquoi te préoccupes-tu de mon apparence, sans accorder à mes pensées la moindre importance ?” chante-t-elle notamment. Une rareté dans les années 90. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 One of the most famous female artists in the Arabic-speaking world, Majida El Roumi has a very distinctive sound which mixes musical traditions from Eastern and Western countries. The Lebanese singer is also known for choosing (and later on writing) poetry-like lyrics, and most of her songs showcase her taste for incredible storytelling. Kon Sadiki is one of her biggest hits and a favorite of mine. With a play on the word “sadiki” (that can either mean “friend” or “truthful”/“honest” in Arabic), the song questions male-female relationships and the objectification of women. “Why do you care about my appearance, but not about my mind?” Something that was quite rare to sing about in Arabic in the 90s. ⬪ AK
N… Natalia Lafourcade – La Llorona (2018)
🇫🇷 La chanteuse mexicaine reprend ici un classique de son pays avec une interprétation poignante du mythe de la Llorona (“La Femme qui pleure”). La Llorona est d’abord une figure d’horreur dans l’imaginaire latino-américain. Mi-fantôme mi dame-blanche, elle pleure ses enfants morts, massacrés par les colons espagnols. Chaque pays en a sa version. Depuis les années 80, elle est devenue une icône féministe grâce aux apports littéraires des écrivaines chicanas. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade takes on here a classic Latin American myth and reinterprets it. La Llorona (“The Weeping Woman”, in Spanish) is thought to be a woman-ghost crying over her children who were slaughtered by Spaniards during the first stage of Mexico’s colonization. In some versions of the tale, her children are drowned and she roams waterfront areas, mourning them. In the 80s, Chicana writers made her into a feminist icon, overpowering the image of horror and “craziness” she had been associated with for years. ⬪ MB
O… Orla Gartland – I Go Crazy (2020)
🇫🇷 Trouvant son tremplin grâce à des covers postées sur YouTube, la multi-instrumentiste irlandaise a fait bien du chemin depuis la sortie de son premier single, en 2012. Ses chansons sont souvent ancrées dans un rythme accrocheur, avec des textes de plus en plus honnêtes et personnels. J’ai choisi ce titre pour la bonne humeur qu’inspire sa mélodie, et il y a quelque chose que je trouve de si beau dans le refrain quand elle chante : “Three words, two hearts, one maybe / Say something before I go crazy” (“Trois mots, deux coeurs, un peut-être / Dis quelque chose avant que je ne devienne folle”) C’est si simple, si efficace. Peu de mots pour signifier beaucoup de choses. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Starting out with covers on YouTube, Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland has made her way patiently, letting her sound evolve one EP after the other. More often than not, her tunes are catchy and her lyrics keep getting more honest and personal with time. What I love about I Go Crazy is that it’s upbeat and happy, and has such good writing at the same time. There’s something about the way she goes: “Three words, two hearts, one maybe / Say something before I go crazy” It’s simple, yet very clever. It just works. ⬪ AK
P… Princess Nokia – Kitana (2017)
🇫🇷 Ok, cette chanson est excellente pour défoncer le patriarcat ou, du moins, faire une séance de boxe. Princess Nokia fait partie des reines du rap féministe. Le morceau fait d’ailleurs partie de la bande-son du film féministe pour teenagers Moxie, sorti récemment sur Netflix. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 This is a great song if you feel like smashing the patriarchy or, you know, having a boxing workout at home. Princess Nokia is a feminist queen of rap, and you should listen to her 2020 albums (she’s been productive). Kitana is one of her older song and has been featured in the soundtrack of Moxie, a new feminist coming-of-age movie (available to stream on Netflix). ⬪ MB
Q… Quilla – Underdog (2020)
🇫🇷 En établissant cette liste d’artistes femmes, nous n’avions pas beaucoup de propositions pour cette lettre de l’alphabet. J’en ai donc profité pour partir à la recherche de musiciennes que je ne connaissais pas, et c’est ainsi que j’ai découvert cette chanteuse, autrice-compositrice, productrice, DJ et… ethnolinguistique canadienne. Anna Luisa Daigneault, de son vrai nom, a marqué la dance music à travers plusieurs collaborations. Elle a notamment co-écrit et chanté Walls (2012), un titre du DJ néerlandais Tiësto, bien connu des fans de house. Dans son dernier album, The Handbook of Vivid Moments (2020), elle s’autorise un mélange des genres pour obtenir un son qui ne ressemble pas à ses projets précédents et est intéressant à découvrir (même quand on n’est pas fan d’EDM). ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 While making this list, we couldn’t think of many female artists whose name started with Q. So I took it as a chance to scour the Internet, looking for artists I hadn’t heard before, and I’m glad I stumbled upon Quilla’s work. Anna Luisa Daigneault is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, producer, DJ and… linguistic anthropologist. She has made a name for herself in dance music over the years. Fans of EDM will maybe recognize her stage name, as she co-wrote and featured in Walls (2012), one of Dutch DJ Tiësto’s biggest hits. In her most recent project, The Handbook of Vivid Moments, released in 2020, she borrows from different genres to create an intriguing and ethereal new sound. ⬪ AK
R… Rosalía – A Ningún Hombre (2018)
🇫🇷 Chanteuse espagnole alliant le flamenco, la trap et la pop, Rosalía rafle les prix (MTV Awards, Grammys, Latin Grammys) et s’est imposée mondialement. Son album El Mal Querer (2018) a été écouté plus de 12 millions de fois dès la première semaine suivant sa sortie. Dans cette chanson, l’avant-dernière de l’album, Rosalía promet qu’elle n’obéira plus jamais à un homme. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 Mixing flamenco, trap and pop music, Spanish singer Rosalía is in for the win. She’s earned major international awards (MTV, Grammys, Latin Grammys), and has basically taken over the world. Her record El Mal Querer (2018) was streamed more than 12 million times on the first week of its release. In A Ningún Hombre song, she pledges that she’ll never obey a man ever again. ⬪ MB
S… Shania Twain – Man! I Feel Like a Woman (1999)
🇫🇷 Je ne vais pas vous mentir, le choix s’est fait ici uniquement pour cette chanson (et d’accord, You’re Still The One aussi). Shania Twain, c’est plus de 28 ans de carrière après des débuts difficiles. Avec un son country et un peu rock, la Canadienne a réussi à percer même dans les pays où la country marche très peu (comme la France). La petite mélodie d’intro de Man! I Feel Like a Woman et le “Let’s go, girls” (“Allez, les filles”) qui la suit sont presque iconiques aujourd’hui, et les références dans les séries et films à ce titre n’ont fait que l’ériger davantage en un incontournable de la culture pop’ qui résiste à l’épreuve du temps. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 I’m going to be very honest with you: I picked this one for the song itself (alright, and for You’re Still The One, too). After a rocky start, Canadian country singer Shania Twain has been in the business for at least 28 years, and scored number ones and platinum albums even in countries where country music usually has trouble getting through to the masses. The intro to Man! I Feel Like a Woman with her saying “Let’s go, girls” has almost become iconic at this point. The song has been referenced in many TV shows and movies over the years, which only makes it more of a pop culture monument that has stood the test of time. ⬪ AK
T… Tems – Damages (2020)
🇫🇷 Jeune productrice, chanteuse et auteure-compositrice du Nigéria, Tems commence à faire parler d’elle en dehors de son pays natal. Elle a sorti son premier EP, For Broken Ears, en septembre 2020. “Tell me what you need from me now” (“Dis-moi ce que tu veux de moi maintenant”), chante-t-elle dans Damages. C’est simple : qu’elle continue sur sa lancée. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 Nigerian producer-singer-songwriter Tems has been gaining popularity lately outside of the borders of her country. She released her first EP last September, and her sound is groovy and makes you want to dance. “Tell me what you need from me now,” she sings in Damages. Well, if it’s up to me: for her to keep going on the path she’s on! ⬪ MB
U… Uma – Pride (2020)
🇫🇷 Le premier EP de cette jeune autrice-compositrice catalane, sorti l’année dernière, est un concentré de douceur, fruit de ses influences musicales diverses, avec des paroles à fleur de peau. Sa musique me donne envie d’aller m’étaler sur de l’herbe fraîche, écouteurs dans les oreilles, oubliant le monde autour de moi. Mais pandémie oblige, je me contente de l’écouter chez moi, yeux fermés… m’imaginant étalée sur de l’herbe fraîche en plein printemps. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Born in Catalonia, this young songwriter released her very first EP last year. Her sound is pure guitar-driven goodness and softness, and her words are just as delicate. Whenever I listen to her record, I wish I could go lay on some fresh grass under the sun, with my earphones in, and forget about the world for a while. But since there’s a pandemic still going on, I’ll keep settling for an imaginary hangout at the park in my mind. ⬪ AK
V… Vel the Wonder – Idols (2020)
🇫🇷 Rappeuse et graffeuse, Vel chante “tu lucha es mi lucha” (“ta lutte est la mienne”) sur une production jazzy dans ce titre. Un beau rap, doux, poétique et profond qui appelle à la convergence des luttes. Elle favorise d’ailleurs les collaborations avec d’autres MC féminines et sa marque de vêtements, Viva la Bonita, s’inspire des femmes “sans peur”. ⬪ MB
🇬🇧 In this tune, rapper and street-artist Vel sings “tu lucha es mi lucha” (“your struggle is mine”) on a jazzy beat. A call to join forces, in my opinion. W… Warda – Batwanes Beek بتونس بيك (1992)
🇫🇷 C’est l’une des artistes les plus connues de la musique arabophone. Warda Ftouki, dont le prénom veut dire “rose” en arabe, a fait ses débuts enfant à Paris, avant d’en être expulsée avec sa famille durant la guerre d’Algérie pour leur soutien au Front de libération nationale (FLN). Et c’est beaucoup plus tard, dans les années 70, qu’elle s’établit en Egypte et y réalise le plus beau de sa carrière. Warda al-Jazairia, comme on la surnomme, a plusieurs très belles chansons dans son riche répertoire mais celle-ci tient une place particulière dans mon coeur. ⬪ AK
🇬🇧 Warda Ftouki is one of the most prominent Arabic singers. She started music very early on, in Paris. But after the Algerian War of Independence broke out, she and her family were kicked out of France for showing support to the National Liberation Front, a political party for the independence of Algeria from the French. In the 70s, Warda settled for good in Egypt, and her career took off from there. She has a rich discography, but this song is dear to my heart. ⬪ AK

🇬🇧 I had to include a heartbreak song by another Mexican singer (and actress), Ximena Sariñana. In Cobarde (“coward”), she describes falling out of love, from both perspectives. In an interview conducted with a local Mexican web magazine, she explained that she wanted to stop writing only through the lens of the one that’s been left. I often listen to it in the morning when I need a reality check. ⬪ MB

🇫🇷 Cette native de Londres a baigné toute son enfance dans la musique. Elle a toujours aimé chanter pour ses proches, mais n’a jamais songé à en faire sa carrière. Puis un soir, alors qu’elle était de sortie à Nottingham où elle venait d’emménager, elle s’est laissé tenter et a pris le micro en public. Sa performance a alors attiré l’oeil (ou plutôt l’oreille) d’une programmatrice de petits concerts acoustiques, et de là, tout est parti. Sa musique mêle soul, r’n’b et jazz, et son style d’écriture est assez franc et direct. Dans ce titre du même nom que son dernier EP, elle explique sa nouvelle façon de voir les matins, qu’elle aborde désormais avec gratitude parce qu’ils sont synonymes d’un nouveau jour, d’une nouvelle chance.
