On Monday, we start off the week right with our #SongOfTheWeek (have you checked out Zak Abel’s spoonful-of-kindness music video?) and on Friday we end it on a good note with #RecsFriday.
Without further ado, here are this week’s recommendations.
From us to you. With love.
Lessons – Kalpee & Mortimer
Months ago, Kalpee was looking for a new artist to add to The Island Stage’s line-up at South by Southwest (SXWS). Then he met Mortimer in Jamaica, and they ended up both performing at the event in March 2021 and working together on this new track. “Everyday’s a lesson”, they sing. Which might seem obvious, but remains valid. The collaboration feels organic and sounds a little bit old school. ⬪ Ahlem Khattab
One Foot in Front of the Other – Griff
In the second single from her forthcoming album (of the same name), the British singer focuses on the early stages of moving on. She likens the strangeness and hardship of it to the actual physical action of getting up after falling, or staying still for too long. An interesting take, paired with a catchy and solid melody. ⬪ AK
Kids (Don’t End Up Like Me) – The Academic
As soon as the song started, I found myself dancing along to it. And right away, I thought: “This would PERFECT on an episode of The O.C.” For many, the 2003-2007 show was our first real taste of rock, punk and indie music of the time, opening up a whole new musical world. The Irish band’s first single from their next record (coming in July) sounds like a classic from that era. ⬪ AK
Wanting Is Never Enough – Nathan Kawanishi & SYML
If I didn’t know it for a fact, I wouldn’t believe. This song is a remix of SYML’s Stay Close. From the original track, Nathan Kawanishi manages to craft something entirely different, and totally mesmerizing. So it makes perfect sense that this version gets its own name. The piano-led (almost) instrumental is soothing and exactly what one needs to end a long week. ⬪ AK
