Every Friday, we end the week on a good note with a selection of freshly released songs.
Here are our new #RecsFriday! (You can also find them on our Instagram and Twitter accounts)
From us to you. With love.
This Is a Song – LIP TALK
When I first heard Lip Talk sing “This is the sound of my voice in the morning” as the song started, it really felt like I was waking up from a dream and she was easing me back into reality. Almost like a lullaby, but in reverse, and just as soothing. This Is a Song is the last track on Laughing & Eating Cake, her latest album that came out on August 4th, and I can’t help but think of it as an echo to Running in Place, the first song on the record. It’s a bit softer, a bit slower, too, but just like Running in Place is the perfect way to enter the Brooklyn-based producer’s universe, This Is a Song is the right one to leave it. If you usually listen to new albums in order, this recommendation might feel like a spoiler, but I had to include it. ⬪ Julia Bergier
Tornado Country – Allison Ponthier
Although it’s her own story that Allison Ponthier sings about here, it doesn’t make Tornado Country any less relatable, and it’s precisely what I love about her songwriting. I’ve never been to Texas where she grew up or even seen a tornado with my own two eyes, but I don’t need to to be moved by her words and the song’s soft melody. It also reminded me of another one of Allison’s songs, Harshest Critic (which you might remember from our May 14th #RecsFriday). They’re both on her EP Faking My Own Death, which came out today, August 6th. ⬪ JB
Sky Blue, Bad News – Laura Stevenson
Released just three days before the album it’s from, this song might feel very relatable if you easily blame yourself for things that are beyond your control. That’s how Laura Stevenson introduced it on Instagram, adding that it’s also “about bugs. Which we all can agree are gross.” What’s definitely not gross, though – quite the opposite even –, is the soft melancholy she explores her doubts with, and it comes with a music video that’s just as pretty. ⬪ JB
Just Existing – daysormay
You need to burn off some frustration? Just Existing might be what you need. It’s highly catchy and although we still can’t jump along in a concert venue as the Canadian band performs it live, you can totally enjoy it at home for now. A musical shot of pure energy. It might also bring you some comfort if you sometimes feel lost, stuck or overwhelmed with everything happening around you. Just Existing is also the title of daysormay’s forthcoming album, set for a release on October 6th. ⬪ JB
