In My Mind – Lyn Lapid

“Quiet kids, rise for your national anthem, Lyn Lapid captioned one of the videos she posted to tease her newest single. And, indeed, the 18-year-old musician delivered. Lyrically, as well as sonically, In My Mind is all about that dissonance that can occur between who one really is on the inside and who others think they are. And it’s not necessarily about being shy. Some people just get overwhelmed with their own thoughts. “But darling running ain’t enough to escape from the monsters in my brain,Lapid sings in the first verse, right before going into the catchy (and highly relatable) chorus. The songwriter made waves on TikTok in 2020, a success that culminated in and continued with the release of Producer Man. She’s had a busy following year: this is the third original track she has officially put out in 2021. ⬪ Ahlem Khattab

Thesis – Casper Skulls

Like many other artists (and the rest of the world), Casper Skulls saw the pandemic press pause on their upcoming projects. As guitarist and vocalist Melanie St-Pierre put it in an Instagram post from August 2020: “This year has been super weird.” Sharing her own experience of 2020, she talked about the Canadian band’s second (and forthcoming) album and its timeline, both being “kind of up in the air (…) due to the pandemic.” But now the record, Knows No Kindness, has a release date: November 12, 2021. Thesis is its first single. The track is inspired by St-Pierre’s high school experience and how she found herself “in creative writing at the age of 18 years old”, which is “perhaps why (she) even (makes) music today”, she explained in the album announcement. The poetic track comes with a music video directed by Melanie St-Pierre, Paul Los and Nora Burns, with animations by Gaia Alari. Snow is shown covering everything in the video, which might make you long for winter, both for the pretty scenery and the release of the full record. ⬪ Julia Bergier

When You Were Mine – Joy Crookes

If Amy Winehouse is one of your favorite genres, you will surely enjoy this track. Here, Joy Crookes reminisces over her first love and offers a not-so-common kind of post-break-up song: she has accepted that her ex moved on and is happily in love in the arms of someone else. With her words, she clearly sets the scene, and it feels like you’re watching a movie, set in Brixton, London. The British songwriter draws a parallel between past and present, all while being hopeful towards the future, over a cheerful yet slightly melancholic melody. On Instagram, Crookes said a lot of listening to Ghanian modern highlife pioneer Ebo Taylor went into the making of the song. So it’s no surprise to hear some brass on the track, played by the singer herself. When You Were Mine is the third single off  Joy Crookes’s first album, Skin, coming out on October 15th. ⬪ AK

Change My Clothes – Dream and Alec Benjamin

After nostalgia in Roadtrip and mental health in Mask, Dream delves into the fear of failure that sometimes comes with one’s big dreams and ambitions in Change My Clothes, a track in collaboration with Alec Benjamin. While the lyrics are undeniably filled with melancholy that will resonate with anyone who has ever stayed in their comfort zone rather than gone after what they wanted, there’s still a touch of hope and optimism in them. Hearing the Minecraft streamer (who started his music career in 2021) sing “it’s worth it to make some mistakes / You miss all of the shots that you don’t take” could be exactly what you need to shoot your own shot. ⬪ JB
