Every Friday, we end the week on a good note with a selection of freshly released songs.
Here are our new #RecsFriday! (You can also find them on our Instagram and Twitter accounts)
From us to you. With love.
Lake Superior – Tasha
Listening to this song for the first time felt like diving into a memory with Tasha. She paints such a vivid, precise picture of it that hearing her sing “The blue of that sky / The water cool around our legs” just transports you to Lake Superior, her mom’s hometown in Wisconsin where the music video was shot. It’s melancholic and touching, and whether you’ve been through a similar experience or not, it’s hard not to be moved by her soft voice and tender words. ⬪ Julia Bergier
Before You Gotta Go – Courtney Barnett
In this new single from her forthcoming album, Things Take Time, Take Time (November 12), Courtney Barnett delves into anger, or rather what comes after a fight. We don’t know how it started nor why, but it doesn’t really matter here. It’s the affection she feels for the other person — and how important it is to let them know — that truly counts, which might fade in the background sometimes when we get angry. It’s a sweet reminder, beautifully delivered by the Australian singer-songwriter over a guitar-led melody that will have you nod along throughout the whole song. ⬪ JB
Childhood Bedroom – Ben Platt
Childhood Bedroom is one of those songs that make me feel like they’ve been written for people like myself. It has all of my favorite ingredients: some softness, relatable lyrics and a catchy melody with 80s vibes that has me on my feet within seconds. In a little bit over 3 minutes, Ben Platt shares his method to escape his worries whenever need be, with a contagious energy and positivity that just make you want to try it, too. So if you need to let off some steam and forget about the world for a moment, it’s definitely a song for that. It’s featured on the American singer’s second album, Reverie, that came out this Friday, August 13. ⬪ JB
Brooklyn – Maisie Peters
Once again, I can blame one of my Friday picks on Maisie Peters’ soft voice and lyrics (and I’m not mad about it at all, quite the opposite). Brooklyn is a bubbly declaration of sisterly love with a really catchy chorus that might play in your head on a loop after you’ve listened to it once. The melody may also make you both want to dance and plan a trip to New York with your sister (or the friend you view as such, after all family isn’t necessarily limited to blood relatives). It was released on August 11 alongside You Signed Up for This, which is also the name of the British singer’s debut album set to come out on August 27. ⬪ JB
