On Monday, we start off the week right with our #SongOfTheWeek (if you’re feeling like a sunny getaway, you should definitely check out Adam Melchor’s latest music video, featuring Lennon Stella) and on Friday we end it on a good note with #RecsFriday.
Without further ado, here are this week’s recommendations.
From us to you. With love.
Special Girl – Dodie
Dodie’s album is finally out and has many interesting and clever tracks, but this one caught my ear more than most. Starting off softly, Special Girl just gets progressively louder as the British songwriter admits and reclaims her faults. “Sorry, I just know the way that I am”, she sings. Melodically, the tune is so intricate, unusual and even a little weird, in the best way. You can’t get more dodie than that. The outro, which she called “a hot mess” while talking to Apple Music about it, is a perfect ending to the song and might make you want to get up and dance. ⬪ Ahlem Khattab
Funeral – Maisie Peters (ft. James Bay)
I’m a big fan of Maisie Peters’ soft voice and songwriting, so I was really excited when I saw that she wrote an entire soundtrack for the second season of Trying (on Apple TV). Funeral is the first song from it and it’s the duet I didn’t know I needed this week. It’s cute and passionate, a little dark but in a romantic way, and it makes me both want to fall in love and watch fictional characters do it. The song has been playing on repeat since it came out and I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the soundtrack (coming out on May 21). ⬪ Julia Bergier
MOON – Sofiane Pamart
Am I over the moon right now? Maybe, thanks to the latest release by pianist Sofiane Pamart. It’s Beethoven’s Sonata for piano n°14 (or better known as “Moonlight Sonata”) revisited, with the magic and talent, by the Frenchman. On his Instagram, the young composer – who calls himself Piano King – has described the track as a “featuring” with the German genius. The beginning of the song is all Beethoven’s, but Sofiane comes in with a surprise twist around 1’20. A beautiful and powerful homage. ⬪ Marie Bail
My Point of You – Matilda Mann
There are many songs out there about rediscovering oneself after a breakup, but the way Matilda Mann does it with My Point of You feels different to me. Effortless. And somehow, sweet. Over a simple and soft melody on the guitar, she rolls out the different stages of moving on in a progression that feels natural. Through specific lines that manage to feel relatable, she paints a picture that takes life, like a movie. Oh and, I just can’t get enough of the hook: “Cause it’s me who’s coming back / Not you.” ⬪ Ahlem Khattab
Me Without You – Ashe
We’re kind of staying in the same theme of post-breakup self (re)discovery with Me Without You by Ashe. She sings about how she’s been let down by her ex and how she can’t believe she “stayed as long as (she) did” on an upbeat melody. It’s a catchy, almost joyful self-love anthem that’ll make you want to get up and join the singer in the dancing party she’s having in her music video (catch it on our YouTube playlist down below). It’s really the song to play if you need an upbeat reminder that you’re worth it on your own, and that you have so much to offer. ⬪ Julia Bergier
Profundo – Bomba Estéreo
Here’s a sweet tune to soothe your soul. Profundo feels like an invitation to go on an inner and spiritual journey. It’s as if the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo wants you to dig deeper within yourself and face your own authenticity. “Touch me in silence in between the deepest parts of my soul”, sings frontwoman Liliana Saumet. Her powerful yet fragile poetry unravels the knots in my stomach. ⬪ Marie Bail
