Every Friday, we end the week on a good note with a selection of freshly released songs.
Here are our new #RecsFriday! (You can also find them on our Instagram and Twitter accounts)
From us to you. With love.
Fast Car – Jamila Woods
A few years ago, I could spend hours on YouTube listening to covers so I’m always happy to see artists I love reimagine songs I’m fond of. Jamila Woods did it wonderfully with her version of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. It’s soft, soothing and pays a beautiful tribute to the 1988 song. The track is featured on Join the Ritual, an album celebrating the 25th anniversary of the American record label Jajaguwar with songs and artists that influenced the company’s history. It’s set to come out on September 24. ⬪ Julia Bergier
Resentment – Madi Diaz
If you’re familiar with Kesha’s 2020 record High Road, you might have already heard this song written by Madi Diaz, Stephen Wrabel et Jamie Lloyd. Diaz explained on Instagram that she was “over the moon that (she’d) been able to do (her) own version for History of a Feeling,” her next album that should be coming out on August 27, and I’ll admit that I’m very happy about it too. It’s both delicate and heartbreaking to listen to the American singer-songwriter delve into her resentment and conflicted feelings towards a partner who isn’t treating her right, with lines such as “It’s a shame knowing we could be good / That you could treat me better if you really wanted to / And if you can’t do it for my sake, then do it for our sake.” If you relate or just need an outlet to balance out the sadness, you can watch the music video and picture yourself destroying cars alongside Madi. ⬪ JB
That’s Life Honey – Boy Scouts
Have you ever felt like a song had been written exactly for you when listening to it for the first time? That’s what happened to me after I clicked on That’s Life Honey’s music video that YouTube suggested (sometimes the algorithm gets it right). Hearing Boy Scouts sing “Well, I wanted to / But couldn’t figure how / My burdens / Should become yours now” both made me feel understood in the best way and had me checking out her previous albums in a heartbeat. The next one is coming out on October 1rst but in the meantime, you can watch her play her guitar on a boat in the music video. ⬪ JB
99 to the Moon – Said The Whale
If you had a long, tough week and need some cheering up, 99 to the Moon is exactly the song you need. It’s full of love and good vibes and will have you sing its chorus at the top of your lungs in no time. You’ll find the lyrics in the 90s-inspired music video for the perfect karaoke session but beware, it’s extremely cute. If you get easily overwhelmed by heartwarming Twitter threads that restore one’s faith in humanity and other lovely, positive posts you can find on the Internet, you might even cry a little bit. It’s adorable though, and definitely worth it. Dandelion, Said The Whale’s 7th album, is coming out on October 22, which leaves you plenty of time to check out the rest of their discography. ⬪ JB
